In Newton-Conover City Schools we are continuously striving to enhance learning and ensure that our students are prepared for the constantly shifting demands of the complex world that they will enter after graduation. It is our mission to equip our students with skills that will serve them well, regardless of their career path. These skills include critical thinking; creative problem-solving; responsibility and adaptability; flexibility; civic, financial, and global awareness; and collaboration. Our teachers are working hard to create learner-centered classrooms where students take ownership of their learning. Teachers in Newton-Conover design lessons that meet students where they are and provide them with authentic real world problem solving opportunities that will prepare them to be healthy, knowledgeable, and productive citizens. Furthermore, our teachers support our students by leveraging technology and other resources to provide them with personalized learning experiences. Our outstanding educators move seamlessly from teacher to facilitator to coach in order to support our students and their learning. That active, engaged, and inspiring learning environment is what we want for all students in Newton-Conover. In fact, we developed our strategic plan to address the importance of consistency in and equitable access to these powerful learning environments. That's why I'm excited to tell you about the transformational work we are beginning that will help us define what the ideal student-centered learning environment should look like. We know that our students will be citizens long after their days as students are over. Our goal is to instill attributes and attitudes into our students that will lead to both personal and professional success. We want them to be effective communicators, strong collaborators, ethical and global citizens, creative and critical thinkers, and goal-directed resilient individuals. Now it's time to define what teaching and learning needs to look like to get us there. As we continue this work of defining contemporary teaching and learning and better integrating technology into our classrooms, we need your help. We have already begun looking at all our instructional practices and standards to create an instructional model that aligns with our vision for learning. We have also begun evaluating how we can leverage digital resources to ensure personalized learning opportunities for each student in our district, and we are exploring how to best provide teachers and students with the tools and policies needed to facilitate the ongoing use of technology. I became an educator because I believe in the positive impact in education can have on every single one of our students. My passion for personalized learning comes from the fact that I believe every learner is unique and that each child, regardless of background, address, ethnicity, gender or any other identifiable factor, deserves a personalized education---developed based on learner profile and both social and emotional and academic needs. It is this belief that has sparked my desire to ensure we collectively meet the needs of all students. As we move forward with a small-scale implementation of these practices and tools, we will need all of our voices to evaluate, problem-solve, and improve that work. I have asked our principals to help me lead this conversation. I encourage you to engage in the conversations at your schools, so that with your feedback, we can begin to immediately align the necessary resources to meet this critical and fundamental need. It's an exciting opportunity to make our vision for personalized learning a reality for all students, and I hope you'll join me.
