District Teacher of the Year Goes to Mrs. Greenwald

Story by Zoey Stiltner

Mrs. Greenwald, Discovery High School’s cherished math teacher, won the District Teacher of the Year award. She got a brand new Toyota Camry to use for the entire year as a reward.

“I think Mrs. Greenwald deserves Teacher of the Year because of her attitude and love for teaching,” said senior Colson Whitley.

Many students go to Mrs. Greenwald for advice, even if it is not related to math. She is a great support for students.

The staff at Discovery nominated Mrs. Greenwald for Teacher of the Year. After she was nominated, she had essays and an interview process to go through.

During the interview process, people from the Central Office, board members, and last year’s Teacher of the Year all asked her questions based on her application.

There are no requirements to be nominated for Teacher of the Year other than being a licensed teacher.

“In the district, there are many teachers, and then in the region, there are even more teachers,” said Mrs. Greenwald about the competitiveness of getting Teacher of the Year. “So in that way, it’s competitive, because there are a lot of great teachers in a lot of places.”

Mrs. Greenwald wrote a speech for this year’s convocation meeting. However, she was not able to attend the meeting.

After winning the district Teacher of the Year, Mrs. Greenwald had more essays and interviews to complete. As the district Teacher of the Year, Mrs. Greenwald doesn’t have any extra responsibilities. However, if she had made it past the district level, she would have had to be on committees and have other responsibilities.

“It’s an honor to be recognized by my coworkers,” said Mrs. Greenwald, “and then even more of an honor to be chosen as teacher of the year over all the Newton-Conover school district. That’s just a tremendous honor.”

Mrs. Greenwald deserves this award for all of the hard work she puts into Discovery High School and the students.
