DHS Science Olympiad Team Gears Up for Competition

Story by Anyin Zhao

Science Olympiad is a premier national STEM competition for middle and high school students in the United States. Covering a wide array of disciplines—including biology, chemistry, physics, and engineering—the program emphasizes teamwork and hands-on problem-solving, serving as a vital platform for students to explore the sciences and sharpen their skills.

Originally scheduled for earlier this year, the competition was postponed due to heavy snowfall. Now, with only one week remaining until the event, DHS students are in the midst of an intense yet organized final push to prepare their projects.

The team is radiating confidence, a sentiment echoed by member Jason Zhu: “I am extremely confident in all of us, not just myself. I’ve seen the blood and sweat so many members of our team have put into their events, and that is the source of my confidence. But,” he added with a smile, “if we do bad, don’t quote me on this.”

A key factor in this year’s preparation is a shift in strategy. Sophomore Harrison Scronce said that the biggest difference from last year is the lack of procrastination. “Since I’m in charge of several build events, I’ve been trying to plan proactively and lay out rules and guidelines. This way, my partners who don’t have as much experience don’t have to worry as much as I did last year.”

This proactive approach has fostered a more efficient and self-assured environment. As the competition draws near, the students of DHS are ready to embrace the challenge with passion and precision.
