Newton, NC — The Newton-Conover City Schools Board of Education is proud to announce the appointment of Dr. Harry C. Efird as the new principal of Conover School, bringing more than 25 years of experience in North Carolina public education to the role.
Dr. Efird currently serves as the assistant principal and coordinator of secondary education at Newton-Conover High School. In this role, he has led key curriculum and instructional initiatives, coordinated professional development, overseen the implementation of Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS), and guided school improvement efforts that align with district and state priorities.
A passionate educator, Dr. Efird holds a Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. His dissertation, Horizontal Funding Equity in North Carolina Public Schools (2012–2022), highlights his deep commitment to fairness and access for all students. He also earned a Master of School Administration and a Bachelor of Arts in English from Appalachian State University.
Dr. Efird’s diverse leadership background spans multiple school levels and roles—including English teacher, coach, department chair, assistant principal, interim principal, and district coordinator. His work in instructional coaching, restorative practices, IEP compliance, and strategic scheduling has led to meaningful student growth, most notably his leadership contribution to earning the highest EVAAS growth for secondary schools in Iredell-Statesville Schools from 2020 to 2023.
Known for his servant leadership style, systems thinking, and ability to build trust, Dr. Efird is a tireless advocate for inclusive, student-centered environments. He believes every student deserves to be known, supported, and challenged to grow.
“We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Efird as the new principal of Conover School,” said Dr. Aron Gabriel, Superintendent of Newton-Conover City Schools. “His unwavering commitment to educational equity, his depth of experience across school settings, and his heart for students with exceptional needs make him the right leader at the right time for Conover.”
Outside of his work in education, Dr. Efird is an avid marathon runner and triathlete who draws inspiration from the discipline and resilience of endurance sports. He also enjoys backcountry hiking and camping, and most of all, cherishes time with his wife, Stephanie, and their family.
Dr. Efird shared, “It is a true honor to serve the Conover School community. I look forward to partnering with families, staff, and students to create an environment where every learner is empowered to thrive.”
