NEWTON-CONOVER CITY SCHOOLS BUILDING

November 6, 2025: The Newton-Conover City Schools Board of Education is pleased to announce it has selected Dr.Emily Shaw as the District’s new Superintendent during its meeting on November 6, 2025. Dr. Shaw is replacing Dr. Aron Gabriel, the current Superintendent, who begins his new role as the President for Mayland Community College starting on January 1, 2026.

Dr. Shaw is in her 21st year as an educator, having served as a teacher, assistant principal, principal and district-level administrator. Dr. Shaw is currently the Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources for Montgomery County Schools, having served in that role since January 2023. In her current role, among other things, Dr. Shaw supervises the human resources department, manages all hiring and recruiting for qualified school employees, oversees the licensure process for certified staff, and manages training and development for assistant principals and principals. In addition, since January 2025, Dr. Shaw has served as an Adjunct Professor at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

“We are excited to welcome Dr. Shaw as the next Superintendent of Newton-Conover City Schools,” said Mr. Tim Hayes, Chair of the Board of Education. “Dr. Shaw has an impressive breadth of experience as an educator, having held a wide range of positions. She impressed the Board with her focus on student success as well as her overall vision to lead Newton-Conover City Schools into the future. Dr. Shaw is the right person to lead us forward, and we can't wait for the great things in store for our District and its students.”

Dr. Shaw earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. She also holds a master’s degree from Wingate University and a doctoral degree from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

Dr. Shaw enjoys spending time with her husband of 17 years and her two sons and enjoys camping and watching the Atlanta Braves.

Dr. Shaw will begin her work as Superintendent on January 1, 2026.
