Statement from N-CCS Board of Education Chair Tim Hayes.
Good morning, students, parents, and citizens of Newton-Conover City Schools. Students, we hope you’re enjoying your summer break, and we look forward to welcoming you back to our campuses in August. I would like to extend my sincere appreciation and thanks to Chairman Isenhour and the Catawba County Board of Commissioners for their decision not to move forward with the proposed school consolidation plan at their July 21st meeting. This thoughtful choice allows for more informed future decisions and prioritizes the unique needs of the Newton-Conover community. The Commissioners' commitment to listening to our community concerns and prioritizing the values of local families and students should not go unnoticed. Preserving neighborhood schools supports not only educational continuity but also the social fabric and identity of our Newton and Conover. Their leadership in this matter reflects both responsiveness and respect for the diverse needs across the county. I would also like to thank all who spoke in favor of maintaining the local autonomy of Newton-Conover City Schools. We told you that your voices mattered, and your collective input was undeniably a contributing factor in this change of plans. Current students, alumni, faculty, retired faculty, community members: you spoke up for something you believe in, and you were heard. The N-CCS Board of Education firmly believes that a strong public education system benefits both the cities of Newton and Conover by fostering stability, growth, and serving as a vital economic driver for our citizens. We look forward to continuing to build upon the successes already established within our county and maintaining the foundational strength of N-CCS in preparing students for college and career readiness. Most public schools across the state have seen decreased enrollment in recent years, and Newton-Conover is certainly no exception. However, Catawba County’s own funded study shows that Newton-Conover enrollment is set to increase based on birth rates and new housing development within district boundaries. As we have stated many times, Newton-Conover City Schools stands ready to collaborate with neighboring districts, communities, and government agencies to find the best path forward in educating our children. Together, we move forward with
purpose, resilience, and the unwavering belief in our students, staff, and community.
Tim Hayes, Chairman of the Board, Newton-Conover City Schools.
